1. Interesting Article – Letting Go of Should

17 Totally Normal Things to Feel Right Now, According to Therapists by Anna Borges - Self Magazine

If you are experiencing an array of emotions, Anna Borges’ piece in Self Magazine17 Totally Normal Things to Feel Right Now, According to Therapists, is a must-read. It will provide comfort, understanding, and help normalizing your feelings. In response to thinking we should be acting a certain way, Borges says, “There is no ‘right’ way to handle this.” She interviewed mental health professionals about the most frequent worries and feelings being discussed during their client sessions. Common themes included burn out, calm, grief, regret, numbness, and inadequacy. A beautiful message was incorporated from Vernessa Roberts, LMFT as shared below. What might help you let go of should?

2. Interesting Resource – Letting Go of Anxiety

In a recent Smead MyOrganized.life podcast, I was interviewed by my friend, John Hunt. For this episode, “Ways to Stay Calm and Cope During a Crisis,” I shared strategies for letting go of some stress and anxiety that many of us are experiencing right now. Some of the suggestions included were to gather resources, focus on mind/body practices, organize your environment, practice gratitude, and limit media time. What helps you let go of anxiety?

 

 

3. Interesting Experience  – Letting Go of What Was

Encourage Yoga - Project LOVE

One of the newer practices that I began this past year was taking yoga classes. I found a lovely studio, Encourage Yoga, near where I live. As things developed with the pandemic, the studio temporarily closed. The owner and yoga teacher, Al Bingham, quickly revamped the studio concept. Not only did he retool to offer yoga using Zoom, but he also created a generous offer called Project LOVE. Classes are available for $5 each. However, if the cost is a barrier, by entering the code “LOVE” upon checkout, your class is free. For many of us that treasured being physically present with one another, the shift to virtual yoga class required letting go (even if temporary) to what was so that we could experience this new community. I am so grateful to Al and the Encourage Yoga folks for their flexibility and continuity. What will help you let go of what was so that you can experience another way of being?

 

 

4. Interesting Season – Letting Go of Disorganization

Spring is a wonderful season for letting go, decluttering, and designing new patterns. This is even more important because of the unprecedented world change. With the shift of normal, you might be feeling new organizing challenges, and unsure of how to move forward. Take this opportunity to reset your organizing goals, declutter the extraneous, and create the calm you deserve. Change is possible, especially with support. 5. Interesting Thought – Letting Go of Busyness

Be still.

What an odd time we’re in. For many people, life has significantly slowed down. There are no offices to commute to, parties to attend, soccer practices to bring the kids to, or errands to run. We might be working from home and feeling challenged by that shift. But even with that change, things feel slower. There are fewer cars on the road, the shops are closed, and visitors are staying at home. And from these dramatic changes, we have an opportunity to lean into this quiet, to slow our busy bodies and minds, and notice the stillness. If you are willing, let go of your busyness badge and embrace what it feels like to be still.

1. Interesting Read – Fresh Start Goals

Organizing and Big Scary Goals by Sara Skillen

Hot off the press is the insightfully written organizing book, Organizing and Big Scary Goals – Working With Discomfort and Doubt to Create Real Life Order by my colleague, Sara Skillen. I am a big fan of Sara’s blog and enjoyed reading her “how-might-you?” book, where she uses her organizer and coach lens throughout. While she includes a few how-tos, Sara weaves engaging, relatable stories throughout, including overcoming one of her challenges, the fear of bike riding. These stories help readers understand that finding solutions to their organizing challenges can be done in a relaxed, exploratory, and uniquely personal way. Sara concludes that “…big change can happen for anyone…by letting go of external messages, embracing their fear and discomfort, and asking for help when they need it…they can achieve unexpected results and stay consistent.” If you’re struggling with getting organized and reaching your goals, read Sara’s book, which offers you a compassionate fresh start.

Many of these places are endangered due to the encroachment of modern life. In this short video, Sanctuaries of Silence, Hempton invites you to experience the preciousness of these beautifully captured explorations.

Life can be noisy. We have busy thoughts within combined with external physical distractions. It has become more challenging to hear our own thoughts, let alone experience quiet. Activities such as daily mindfulness meditation, yoga, and nature walks help me to create periods of silence. With a clarity of mind and calmness of soul, I am better able to be open, aware, and grateful for each moment, and a fresh start.

 

 

4. Interesting Season – Fresh Start Organizing

Winter can be more of an indoor season, at least it is for me. With this extra time inside, you might be feeling disorganized, overwhelmed, and unsure of how to move forward. 5. Interesting Thought – Fresh Start Time

What is that phrase, “Attitude is everything?” When it comes to how we feel about a new day (or Mondays,) your approach to new can make all the difference with how you do or don’t do next. The start of the New Year gives us an attitude boost for a fresh start and new beginning. Yet the excitement can quickly fade. Remind yourself that you can embrace a fresh start any week, day, hour, or moment. Let go of what you didn’t do, cut yourself some slack, reset, and begin again.

1. Interesting Read – Learning Possibilities

Most of us aren’t great at accepting criticism. It’s common to become defensive. In Thanks for the Feedback – The Science and Art of Receiving Feedback Well* even when it is off base, unfair, poorly delivered, and frankly, you’re not in the mood, coauthors Douglas Stone and Sheila Heen explain why receiving feedback is essential for growth yet challenging to accept. It’s how we learn from life. They say, “Receiving feedback sits at the intersection of these two needs – our drive to learn and our longing for acceptance.”  They explain that individuals who can view themselves are “…easier to work with and to live with.”  The positive news is they believe that receiving feedback is a skill that can be cultivated. The authors provide insights into the three triggers that can block feedback- truth, relationship, and identity triggers, along with strategies to overcome them. What would be possible if you were better able to receive and evaluate feedback?

2. Interesting Product – Morning Possibilities

Studies show that getting quality sleep is essential for our well being and functioning. So having good sleep hygiene and routines is crucial. What if we extended our good sleep habits to our wake-up patterns? How do you get up each morning? If you want to enhance your mood and possibilities for the day, consider this alternative way of waking. Sensorwake Trio designed a unique alarm clock that gently eases you into your day by slowly activating three of your senses- smell, sight, and sound. You can choose from a variety of scents like freshly brewed coffee or a pine forest, and also select a sound. The clock’s three minute “good morning” cycle has a minute of your chosen scent, one minute of light, followed by one minute of sound.



3. Interesting Resource  – Doing Good Possibilities

One of the challenges many of my clients have is letting go of things they no longer want. They often feel bad about tossing something that could be useful to someone else. We look at ways to eliminate their letting go obstacle by helping them feel good about giving things away. We identify potential recipients like family, friends, neighbors, charities, or resale groups. In most households, especially those with children, stockpiles of broken and full crayons are common finds. Bryan Ware, founder and a parent who created The Crayon Initiative, found a way to keep discarded crayons out of the landfills. The non-profit collects donated crayons, melts them down, remanufactures them, and distributes them to art programs at children’s hospitals across the United States. What could be better than releasing your crayon clutter to bring color, joy, and possibilities to kids in need?

1. Interesting Read – Breathing-In Motivation

Low motivation can be caused by too much stress. In The Biophilia Effect – A Scientific and Spiritual Exploration of the Healing Bond Between Humans and Nature, author and biologist, Clemens G. Arvay, shares fascinating ideas about the therapeutic aspects of spending time in nature. He says, “Nature is immensely effective in allowing us to distance ourselves from stress-triggering situations.” Studies have been done about shinrin-yoku or “forest bathing,” which is the Japanese tradition of spending time in the forest and experiencing it through all of your senses. This improves your immune system and a general sense of well-being. Arvay says, “Forest air is like a healing elixir we inhale.” As a person who spends a significant amount of time around trees, flowers, and water, I have experienced the calming, stress-relieving benefits that nature provides. This gives me a healthy balance between relaxation and work and restores my motivation to pursue my goals.



2. Interesting Product – Sounding Motivation

When we’re unhappy and depressed, our motivation to do anything suffers greatly. One way to improve our mood is to focus on gratitude. When we practice gratitude, we feel calmer, less stressed, more positive, and better able to focus on what matters most. With a better mood, our motivation will improve.
